Federal UAV Regulations

Transport Canada has outlined very stringent regulations regarding professional use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for commercial and recreational aerial photo/video throughout Ontario and Canada. UAV video companies must submit a very detailed flight request to Transport Canada well in advance of every single instance they will fly commercially. Should Transport Canada accept a company’s request, they will award a Special Flight Operations Certificate (S.F.O.C.) permitting the aerial company’s request to fly safely over a specific controlled area on a specific date and time.

As well Transport Canada requires all UAV imaging companies carry a minimum one hundred-thousand dollar liability insurance specific to this aerial industry.

With our excellent flight record, Transport Canada grants Pro Sky Video the S.F.O.C’s on a regular basis, which ensures we can safely document our clients’ aerial photo/videos throughout Northern Ontario. Transport Canada is aware that Pro Sky Video carries a one million dollar liability insurance policy, well exceeding Transport Canada’s minimum one hundred thousand dollar insurance coverage.

Many amateur UAV enthusiasts regularly ignore Transport Canada regulations by taking imprudent risks – flying too close to crowds of people, flying over city streets and buildings, etc. Should these amateurs become distracted or encounter any malfunction during flight, the loss of control of their UAV could cause serious damage to people’s health and property, incurring huge damage costs. These UAV operators can face thousands of dollars in fines or even imprisonment.

With Pro Sky Video you can trust over 100 hours in training and flying UAVs professionally. We can also provide our clients a copy of our Transport Canada S.F.O.C. and our one million dollar UAV Insurance Certificate.

What are UAVs?

UAV stands for “unmanned aerial vehicle”, meaning no pilot is aboard the vehicle. The UAV is controlled with a remote control or by a computer. People often refer to them as “drones” and they come in a multitude of sizes and price ranges.

Are UAVs safe?

Yes, the UAVs used by Pro Sky Video are completely safe. We operate within Canadian Aviation Regulations outlined by Transport Canada. We follow a strict regimen of UAV pre-flight testing, weekly maintenance checks, and bi-annual complete maintenance certified inspections by Toronto Drones.

What type of camera do you use?

We use the DJI X3 Ultra HD aerial camera. The camera provides stunning footage and photos at 4k and 1080 resolutions. Via the X3’s Sony Exmor sensor, aerial images are photographed at 12M resolution yielding images at 4000 x 3000 dpi. Including our onboard Zenmuse gimbal stabilizer, we have complete control when rotating the camera up to a full 360 degrees while airborne.

How high can you fly?

Our DJI Inspire 1 UAV is rated for maximum height of 4,500 metres (2.8 miles). Pro Sky Video adheres to Transport Canada regulations and never flies over an altitude of 90 metres. While airborne our UAV is always flown within line of sight.

Are UAVs affected by weather?

Yes. Some drones are more efficient at flying in extreme conditions, but most are meant to fly on clear days year round. Rain, snow, cold weather and wind can affect safe flying and control of a UAV.

Can you fly indoors?

Absolutely! Indoor flight has always been a true test of skill for all levels of operators. Our DJI Inspire 1 UAV’s new Vision Positioning Technology uses a specially designed camera as well as sonic waves to bring simplicity to flying indoors. This technology allows the Inspire to hold its position, stop whenever controls are released, and respond to our flight commands even when GPS is unavailable.

Are you insured?

Yes. Transport Canada regulations stipulate that commercial UAV companies carry $100,000 of 3rd party liability insurance. Pro Sky Video far exceeds this stipulation with our $1,000,000 insurance policy.

Will you record aerial footage anywhere?

We will only fly in areas that fall under our Transport Canada Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC). Transport Canada must give permission where to fly commercially. We will not film over private property, only property owned or controlled by our clients. We refuse any requests to fly and film to “spy” on individuals’ locations or premises.

How much does it cost?

We provide a variety of pricing packages suited to the numerous industries we service. One example is our basic Real Estate marketing package starting at $395.00. Pricing for each project is determined based on the location to be filmed, the amount of footage and photos required, the amount of flight time involved, and travel expenses. As well, we can provide postproduction services offering a finished video production including voice narration, music, motion graphics and text overlays.
